Cape Wind begins construction survey

Published by under Student blog entries

Although its wind turbines have yet to be erected, Cape Wind’s construction survey has finally begun in the Nantucket Sound. The Cape Wind project is the assembling of 130 offshore wind turbines several miles offshore in Horseshoe Shoal for the generation of electricity as an alternative renewable resource of power. The offshore wind farm has a nameplate capacity of 454 megawatts, but its average production is expected to be 174 megawatts, which is enough to generate electricity for up to 75% of the energy demand of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

Earlier assessments of the area had been completed earlier for the permitting process, but this survey is specifically for the final design of the Cape Wind project. Fugro, a Dutch company that performs surveys for oil companies, is completing the survey for Cape Wind. The main focus will be on the characteristics of the sediment that exists at the bottom of the bay, where the wind turbine’s monopiles will be driven. The hollow monopiles will be driven 80 feet into the sediment, and sediment will fill the inside of the monopile, stabilizing the structure. Protective measures are being taken to ensure the safety of marine mammals of the Nantucket area. In the future, there will be at least three more phases for studies concerning the final design of the project.

There is still controversy with Cape Wind, with several major lawsuits and other licensing issues; however, Cape Wind developers still remain hopeful of beginning construction by next year. Some argue that the future of Cape Wind is nonexistent, and many are against it. From a personal standpoint, Cape Wind is an important step forward concerning coastal energy If it succeeds, it will be a huge step in the development and progression of coastal wind energy future.
